Starting Quest: Save and Survive

“Save and Survive” is a newcomer’s very first quest. It begins on its own the moment your hero comes to in the snow beside an abandoned shelter: no armor, no plan, just a wounded fellow in misfortune and hungry vermin about to swarm in on the scent of blood. This short prologue teaches the main rules of the world — talk, search, fight, and leave in time.

Setup

You wake up in the snow beside an abandoned shelter. Nearby is a wounded survivor named Josh: he’s hanging on by his last strength and ready to give you a quick briefing. The quest is assigned automatically — there’s no need to “take” it separately — and in your journal it’s listed exactly as “Save and Survive”.

Quest Steps

The prologue’s objectives go in this order:

  • Talk to the wounded survivor by the shelter. Josh runs a short briefing — that’s your first step.
  • Search the shelter, or head for the road if you’re ready to risk it without supplies. This is a real fork: you can rummage through the starter containers or leave traveling light.
  • Fend off the rats drawn in by the scent of blood. The wounded man’s blood lures the vermin, and you’ll have to drive them off.
  • Survive the final attack and clear the way out. Next comes a dog — riding out this attack is what opens the exit.
  • Leave the starting shelter. The final step is to make it to the road.

How It Actually Plays Out

Talking and Searching

After waking up, talk to Josh first. Then check the shelter’s starter containers: grabbing any loot is enough — and the quest moves on. If what you find doesn’t include a weapon, the game hands you a starter weapon itself, so you won’t be left without a means of defense. After the briefing, Josh follows you and chimes in with lines along the way.

The Fight

The scent of blood draws in rats — you need to wipe them out (the required number is set by a config option). Once the rats are dealt with, the dog’s attack begins. It’s a scripted moment: surviving it opens your way out — Josh dies in this fight, and that’s part of the story, not your mistake.

Leaving Early

Don’t want to dig through the shelter? You can risk it and head for the road traveling light. But the exit isn’t “free”: until the current mandatory step is done, the door won’t let you out, and the game will explain with a hint exactly what’s missing — talk, fend off the rats, survive the attack.

What You Get for It

The prologue’s rewards are experience for the stages you complete: for clearing the rats, for surviving the final attack, and for leaving early to the road, if you chose that path. During the tutorial, achievements for entering the map, discovering places, and the starting dialog don’t count — so the training doesn’t “pad” your achievement list.

Why It Matters

In the spirit of the world, the quest here isn’t a showcase of errands but a reminder that the world is still inhabited by people. The map will later hold your hero’s personal knowledge, and even a marked objective won’t cancel out the cold, the danger, or the weight of your backpack. “Save and Survive” is the first such lesson: talk, fight back, and leave alive.
